Bakersfield VT
Families in Bakersfield enjoy this quiet, family-friendly country town with large, historic houses and its easy commute. In its early years, the town flourished around obvious agricultural pursuits, and the private school Brigham Academy, named for famous son Peter Bent Brigham, who had settled the area in 1797, six years after Vermont became a state. Regional students came and boarded with local families until 1966, and keep the local Historical Society busy with alumni reaching out with questions and contributions to the collection. Our grandmother attended it in elementary school. Today the students K-8 attend the local public school. It is fairly 10 miles equidistant from Enosburg to the North, Jeffersonville to the South, and St. Albans to the West. It boasts the pre-requisite post office, gas station, country library and corner General Store. Neighbors know each other and look out for everyone, especially when it snows.
