“Truss me!” Driving Lamoille County VT Covered Bridges
Lamoille County has twelve working covered bridges, the most of any Vermont county and most US counties. They offer examples of four truss systems over water bodies, including the Howe and the Burr. In Cambridge, you can drive through the Grist Mill or “Grand Canyon” covered Bridge, near Cambridge’s Brewster River Park just off VT 108, and the Poland Bridge, just off VT Rte 15. Nearby Johnson offers the Power House Bridge and Scribner Bridge, just off Route 100C. Travel up VT 109 to see Waterville and Belvidere offering the Lumber Mill and Morgan Bridges, the Church Street, Montgomery and Kissin’ Bridges. One double truss bridge was moved from Cambridge to the Shelburne Museum in 1950. That is now pedestrian traffic only, but still nicely intact.
